The Force is Strong with Sci-Fi Films

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...sci-fi was merely an image within everyone's imagination. From radio and comic books to the big screen, sci-fi films marked their place in pop culture. If there is anyone who can influence sci-fi into American Cinema it would be two of Hollywood's biggest filmmakers, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

In the year of 1982, director Steven Spielberg created the heartwarming tale of E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial. The film is about a young boy by the name Elliot (memorably played by Henry Thomas) who befriends a lost alien who is stranded on Earth. The film won rave reviews by both critics and audiences alike, and in 2005, Spielberg created the highly successful War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. But it was through the creative mind of George Lucas five years earlier who created the most recognizable sci-fi film of all time which is a litte film franchise called Star Wars. Whether you watched it for the first time or the one thousandth time, everyone knows the sci-fi adventure stories of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. With the success of Star Wars IV: A New Hope, Lucas created two more sequals and three prequals, for which all six films are top blockbuster smash hits.

The Star Wars franchise brought a lot of special effect magic to the screen which and has developed new material for future films to come. A total of 10 academy awards were received for the whole Star Wars saga. Thirty five years later for when the first Star Wars film dazzled audiences is now coming back in 3D with Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace is set to be released this February.

Science Fiction films have come a long way and are known to be one of the best film genres out there to this day. Here are my top ten sci-fi films that are surely known to everyone:

10. Close Encounters of a Third Kind

9. Star Trek (2009)

8. Aliens

7. Wall-E

6. The Terminator

5. War of the Worlds

4. E.T.: An Extra Terrestrial

3. Men in Black

2. Avatar

1. Star Wars IV: A New Hope

A good list of sci-fi films, though you did leave out one big important film from Mr. Kubrick. ;)

I'm glad you picked Star Wars IV as your number one, Empire Strikes Back usually gets all the attention but I much prefer the first Star Wars film (1977), it was a stand-alone war movie set in space, before the muppets and ewoks took over. :)

Vote Up.

Three HUGE ones you've missed out:

2001: A Space Odyssey

Blade Runner

Metropolis

They are arguably more influential than most of those you mentioned, though they are all great.
